The Chinese compact-EV segment has become unusually strong for exactly this — especially at the sub-$15K FOB range.
We define the segment loosely:
This segment spans what Chinese manufacturers call "mini EV" (Wuling Bingo, BYD Seagull) on the smallest end through "compact EV" (Geely EX2, BYD Dolphin, MG4) at the segment top.
We stock the Geely EX2 as our default compact urban EV. Specs:
What makes the EX2 our default: the cheaper Chinese mini EVs often make compromises we can't square with a dealer selling to an emerging-market customer who might drive 100 km/day. Thin sound deadening, marginal crash protection, inconsistent paint finish, indifferent charging infrastructure compatibility. The EX2 is a Geely product with Geely-grade engineering discipline — the compromises are in the spec sheet (fewer features) rather than in the build.
Popular in Southeast Asia and Latin America. 420 km CLTC range, LFP battery. Direct competitor to the EX2; chose between them on price and homologation.
Slightly larger (C-segment hatchback rather than B-segment). 435-520 km CLTC depending on pack. If a buyer wants something that feels a size up without crossing into mid-size SUV pricing, the MG4 is often the answer — especially in UK and Thai markets where MG already has dealer presence.
The ultra-compact end of the segment. Sub-4m length, 30-40 km/h top speeds in some trim configurations, targeted at first-time car buyers in dense urban markets. We'll quote these on request but don't stock them as default — the resale and service profile in export markets is weaker than the Geely/BYD tier.
Urban ride-hail fleets. Lagos, Karachi, Ho Chi Minh City, Tashkent. Compact size handles traffic, low operating cost matters, and buyers can buy in volume. Geely EX2 is our standard fleet recommendation.
Last-mile delivery operators. Short daily distances, lots of starts and stops, LFP battery's cycle life matters more than peak range. EX2 and Dolphin work; the smaller Wuling Bingo works for the most space-constrained operations.
Rental and car-sharing operations. Airport short-term rental, urban car-share. Small cars book more easily (customers are less intimidated), and the per-unit capex matters.
Young urban retail buyers. Late-20s to mid-30s professional who doesn't need a family SUV. Wants something economical, modern, and an EV for status. Compact urban EV is the natural fit.
Families needing ~5-7 seats, buyers regularly doing 300+ km trips, buyers in markets where cars are primarily status goods (GCC premium, parts of Southeast Asia's wealthy segments). For these, the compact segment is a false economy — the buyer will quickly regret it and either not buy again or replace prematurely.
Quote on RFQ. A single-unit FOB Shanghai quote will typically include full export documentation, pre-shipment inspection, and our export desk fee. Shipping to most emerging-market ports runs $1,500-$3,000 per unit in 40ft container configuration (four units per container is a common RoRo configuration). The Geely EX2 is our default recommendation. Below that price point, we generally see either build-quality compromises or manufacturer sustainability risks that don't justify the additional savings.
Depending on exact model dimensions and packing method, 3-4 compact EVs fit in a 40ft container. For RoRo shipping, compact EVs travel individually but are stacked more efficiently than larger vehicles, which improves per-unit ocean freight cost.
The models we supply (Geely EX2, BYD Dolphin, MG4) all meet mainstream safety standards in the homologation frameworks they're built for. We don't supply ultra-small 'mini EVs' that lack certified crash protection — those trade safety for price in a way we don't support for fleet-duty use.
